Sometimes, when asked how they arrived at a specific composition, musicians will say, it was just there waiting for me, it just came to me. Sort of like the sculptor who might say, the sculpture was already there, inside the block of stone – in a way it already existed. This is more or less how February March came into being. One February afternoon when my kids were watching TV, I closed the sliding doors and noodled around behind the piano, and – sure enough – this melody came to me, along with the vaguely Spanish, march feel. Within the hour, it was finished, including the title. And it turns out to be the perfect vehicle for Frank’s soprano and Pawel’s double bass – check out their lovely solos.
Sometimes, I have an idea for a song and I will chip away at it for weeks, even months, sometimes to conclude that it really doesn’t work after all. And sometimes I get lucky with something like February March.
